Being a developer for the last 20 years or so, I found that many of the best practices in development applies in Flow too!

When you drop actions into a Flow, you get the standard name of that action. Why is that important? When you go to use the data from this action later, the dynamic content selector will group its properties by this name.

But down the road, do you know what Get items 3 returns just be reading that title? Renaming it will help you know what data belongs to what. To rename, click the menu for the action and select Rename.

Rename it to what the end goal of the action is, what is it doing or returning, for instance, Conferences, List of Contacts, SP Contacts, etc. Just make it unique and important to you. Variables will be your friend here. Using a variable, you can set the value of it once, like parse a string or compile a message, and then reuse that variable whenever needed.

Anything you may use more than once, set it in a variable. To do so, add the action Variable — Initialize variable into your flow, set the variable name, type, and set the value! I am doing this because I create tasks in a few different places, so I want to make sure they all use the same format. Many data connectors are available in Flow, like Slack and Teams, and they allow for simple posting into their services through these actions.

These are great, but consider using an incoming webhook. This will be a more complex actions, for you as the Flow author, but the benefits are greater.

Using an incoming webhook, in most cases, gives you additional customizations to give your posts a cleaner, more professional look. Check out this post on comparing posts to incoming webhooks. There will be more to come, for sure, along with troubleshooting and debugging Flows.

Like Like.Microsoft Flow has many connectors available. A lot of these connectors give you an API into applications, but there are a few connectors that feel like the core of Microsoft Flow.

Hopefully there connectors will be extended soon as some of them feel like a very good start, but could do with more. Although, in some cases you could of course try the hard way using Microsoft Flow expressions. These are:. However there are cases where using these make sense. Like a few weeks ago where I wrote about calling a public web services that returned some data.

How often do you send yourself emails to debug a Flow? These notification actions are a light way option to do the same. The Approval connector has just one action. Start and Approval creates an approval task that can be assigned to a single person or to multiple people:.

The content conversion is one of those limited connectors that could do with some more work form the Microsoft Flow team. At the moment you can convert HTML to text and that is it. The above flow would result in the following output.

This is quite handy if you have html and want to get some text, however there are other file conversion that might be useful too. When you feel the need for using this action to terminate your flow in a failed status then you might find that you need to redesign your flow and just let the failing actions fail the flow, although …. When you select cancelled or Succeeded the Code and Message option disappear from the dialogue. So imagine if one of your flow actions failed but actually you are happy for the overall flow not to report a failure.

You could run this terminate action to make the flow succeed even though an action failed note that you will need to use run after settings on the action. The Compose action reads data and spits it out as dynamic content.

Huh, why would we need this then? We could create a variable see later or we could just build up the data wherever we want it. So you could use this if you want to connect multiple variables or expressions or dynamic content into a single piece of Dynamic Content without the need for creating a variable.

Make sure though that you rename the Compose action. That way you can recognise your Compose variables. This action as particularly useful if you need to manipulate data in an html table using Flow.

Have you ever found yourself creating conditions inside a Apply to each step?

Have a look at the Filter array option. You might also know that this action is currently not available in Flow. Update item is the only action close enough to achieve the task, however, for every Update Item step in Flow a version is created for that list item.

Hence if you do need a 'Set Field in Current Item' action, especially while migrating your SharePoint Designer workflows to Flow then you can consider using the Set Variable action instead.

This blog walks you how you can use this action using a demo. This video demonstrates how the Set Field in Current Item works. It also demonstrates how extra versions are created if you only use Flow's Update Item SharePoint action. For this blog, two separate SharePoint lists have been created. One to run the SharePoint Designer workflows and the other for Flow. Here are some screenshots of the SharePoint list and columns.

Even though this blog primarily focuses on building the Flow, here is a screenshot of the workflow using SharePoint Designer. As you will see in the video, this workflow will create two versions for a list item. Our goal is to create a Flow which will also have only two versions. Now we'll initialize the variable. Initialize simple means assign i. In this demo we will assign two variables, one for the 'Registration Date ' and the other for ' Status '. Type in ' variable ' and select ' Variables - Initialize variable '.

For this demo we'll have to do this twice. Following are the two variables created. For the Date and time type format we have used the String format. The remaining actions can be set however you see fit for your Flow. In this demo, we're testing to see if the Registration Date and the Status fields are blank.

If they are then fill them with values. The Registration date variable is filled using the utcNow expression which returns the current timestamp as a string. The Status var is filled with a manual text entry 'Registered'. Here are some screenshots. Finally, you can add the Update Item action. As you can see below, the variables are used to updated the list item.

With the instructions provided in the blog you have to do this only once. If you still think the 'Set Field in Current Item' is required then feel free to vote for my request I had submitted in the Flow community. Here's the link. You must be a registered user to add a comment.

Historically, configuration data was stored in custom entities as record data and required various tools such as the configuration migration utility to migrate. While such tools still serve valid use cases, Environment variables offer a streamlined way to transport key-value pairs in a solution. At the time of this posting, Environment variables may not be available in all regions.

The initial preview is targeted primarily for professional developers and administrators. You can still make use of them in canvas apps and flows today, however, these citizen developer experiences will become much simpler as we develop new interfaces.

The next step is for native integrations within canvas apps, flow, and custom connectors. Those components would simply reference the environment variable instead of being written to the component directly. Values can then change from environment to environment or even within the same environment without editing the referencing component.

Or you could define an environment variable and have a simple mechanism to reuse it in multiple steps or components. We have other ambitions as well, which will be communicated in the future. Environment variables can be managed through the modern solution interface or through code.

A separate JSON file is created within your solution package, which can also be managed in source control. We also support export to Excel from a model-driven app. This field is part of the Environment variable definition entity is not required. Set a default value for the value to be used in production or when the values should remain the same across different environments.

The Environment variable definition will be represented in the customizations. Also known as a current value or override value.

Environment variables available in preview!

Note: a relationship is currently enforced between the Environment variable definition and the Environment variable value. A value also cannot exist without a definition. Why is there a default value and a value? This allows you to service the definition and default value separately from the current value. It also allows us to extend the functionality in the future to support multiple values scoped to a specific run time context.

A separate JSON file added to your solution file that stores the values. Note: The above is only a recommendation on how to use default values and values. If using both, you will need to handle the logic to determine which value should be used.

When Environment variables do not have any values, users with access to the variables will see a notification. This is a reminder to set the value s so that components dependent on variables do not fail. Notifications will help prevent failures if that step is skipped. The following demonstrates how to send an email to one address in a test environment and to a different email in your production environment without needing to modify the flow.

Note: this has been simplified as a step-by-step process for demonstration purposes; you would likely build your flow to be more dynamic. For the latest and detailed information about this feature, see the feature documentation at Use environment variables. By signing up, you agree to the terms of service.Variables within the flow are not currently supported, but will be added in an upcoming release.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm trying to do some simple calendar event creation and am not able to leverage the same syntax I see in existing templates. Hi Patrick, we're working on this functionality and plan to release it soon. Thanks for your patience and feedback. I was able to get past the above issue leveraging a time API www. Any updates? This seems like a more fundamental and essential business feature for minimal workflow, much more than connecting to twitter!!!

Adding a first class function editing experience in Flow continues to be on our backlog and something we plan to address in the future. However, in the meanwhile, here's a workaround you can employ.

An example to get today's date in the format ofI would do: " utcnow 'yyyy-MM-dd' ". I just found new actions: "Initialize variable", "set variable" and "increment variable". SetVariable is currently bugged and isn't really working for anyone right now, unfortunately. We're hoping to get a fix out with next week's deployments starting on June 5th. There has been some time passed since the last post in this discussion, but I managed to make my WDL expression work in InitializeVariable by putting a space symbol before it.

Without the space before the expression it doesn't work at all. One does get the feeling that there is a huuuuge with much Trumpian emphasis disconnect between the MS development teams and the senior management.

The senior management even have to ask partner organisations like Lenovo to discover that MS developer output is rubbish, and the developers have been lying and blaming others to cover their tracks Click for the top entries.
